During his first run for elected office, Barack Obama played a greater role than his aides now acknowledge in crafting liberal stands on gun control, the death penalty and abortion — positions that appear at odds with the more moderate image he has projected during his presidential campaign.

Hunting groups disputing warnings of lead in venison

Hunting groups say officials in Iowa, North Dakota and Minnesota overreacted by warning that thousands of pounds of venison given to food pantries could be contaminated by lead from bullets.

“It’s alarmist and not supported by any science,” said Lawrence Keane, a vice president and lawyer for the Newton, Conn.-based National Shooting Sports Foundation, a trade association for the firearms and ammunition industry. “High quality protein is now taken out of the mouths of needy, hungry people.”

Bill would allow guns on college campuses

Proposed state legislation would make it legal for some students and faculty to carry handguns on college campuses as a “deterrent” against the wave of college shootings in Baton Rouge and nationwide.

State Rep. Ernest Wooten, R-Belle Chasse, is proposing the controversial bill that could arm more people on campuses from dormitories to classrooms.

SC bill awaiting governor’s OK would lower handgun buy age to 18

Gov. Mark Sanford has not yet decided what he’ll do with a bill awaiting his signature that lowers South Carolina’s minimum age to buy and sell guns from 21 to 18, spokesman Joel Sawyer said Friday.

South Carolina is one of 18 states — and the only one in the South — that has set 21 as the age for handgun ownership, according to the National Rifle Association. Wyoming has no handgun age requirement; in Montana, it’s set at 14; in Vermont, 16, according to the NRA.
